About LakeLevelToday

LakeLevelToday shows today's water level at US lakes and reservoirs, straight from the agencies and operators that measure them, with the history and context to read it.

Where the numbers come from

Nearly every reading on the site comes from a public agency: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Texas Water Development Board and the California Department of Water Resources. A few lakes come from the utility or water district that runs them. We check for new readings every three hours, and each number shows its source and the time the source gives for it. About the data lists every source and how we use it.

What we promise

  • We never estimate or fill in a reading. If an agency doesn't report something, the page says “not reported”.
  • Percent full appears only where the source publishes it, and the page says whose definition of “full” it is.
  • We're independent. No agency or operator endorses or pays us.
  • When a feed is late, the page says so and shows when the last reading came in.
  • We're not an official warning source. For flood warnings, check the National Weather Service.
  • We fix data errors within a day of hearing about them: report one here.

How we make money

We plan to show ads on the site. Ads never change a reading we publish.
